![]() The British diverted the attention of German miners from their deepest galleries by making many minor attacks in the upper levels. ![]() ![]() A gallery of the Kruisstraat mine, begun on 2 January, had been dug for 690 m (750 yd) and was flooded by a camouflet explosion in February 1917, after which a new chamber was dug and charged next to the flooded mine. On 27 August, the Germans set a camouflet, which killed four men and wrecked the gallery for 120 m (400 ft) the mine had been charged and the explosives were left in the chamber. German tunnellers came within metres of several British mine chambers and, well before the Battle of Messines, found La Petite Douve Farm mine. Sappers dug the tunnels into a layer of blue clay 24–37 m (80–120 ft) below the surface, then drifted galleries (horizontal passages) for 5,453 m (5,964 yd) to points beneath the position of the German Gruppe Wijtschate, despite German counter-mining. Spanbroekmolen crater ("Lone Tree Crater" or "Pool of Peace") on one of the highest points of the Messines Ridge, in November 2009.Ĭo-ordinated by the Royal Engineers, the mine galleries were dug by the British 171st, 175th and 250th Tunnelling companies and the 1st Canadian, 3rd Canadian and 1st Australian Tunnelling companies, while the British 183rd, 2nd Canadian and 2nd Australian Tunnelling companies built dugouts (underground shelters) in the Second Army area. To overcome the technical difficulties, two military geologists assisted the miners from March, including Edgeworth David, who planned the system of mines. Sub-surface conditions were especially complex and separate ground water tables made mining difficult. By January, several deep mine shafts, marked as "deep wells" and six tunnels had been started. Harvey, had already begun the preliminaries. The scheme devised by Fowke was formally approved on 6 January 1916, although Fowke and his deputy, Colonel R. Fowke had wanted galleries about 960 m (1,050 yd) long, as far as Grand Bois and Bon Fermier Cabaret on the fringe of Messines but the longest tunnel was a 660 m (720 yd) gallery to Kruisstraat. ![]() In September, Fowke proposed to dig under the Ploegsteert–Messines ( Mesen), Kemmel–Wytschaete (Wijtschate) and Vierstraat–Wytschaete roads and to dig two tunnels between the Douve river and the south-east end of Plugstreet (Ploegsteert) Wood, the objectives to be reached in three to six months. Fowke had been inspired by the thinking of Major John Norton-Griffiths, a civil engineer, who had helped form the first tunnelling companies and introduced the quiet clay kicking technique. The concept of a deep mining offensive was devised in September 1915 by the Engineer-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), Brigadier George Fowke, who proposed to drive galleries 18–27 m (60–90 ft) underground. Background British mining, 1915–1916 Įxample of a mine gallery with timber roof supportĪs part of Allied operations in the Ypres Salient, British mining against the German-held salient at Wijtschate (Wytchaete or Whitesheet to the British) near Messines had begun in early 1915, with diggings 4.6–6.1 m (15–20 ft) below the surface. Just over two months later, on 10 August 1917, the Royal Engineers fired the last British deep mine of the war, at Givenchy-en-Gohelle near Arras. The Battle of Messines marked the zenith of mine warfare. The evening before the attack, General Sir Charles Harington, Chief of Staff of the Second Army, remarked to the press, "Gentlemen, I don’t know whether we are going to make history tomorrow, but at any rate we shall change geography". Their joint explosion ranks among the largest non-nuclear explosions of all time. The mines, secretly planted and maintained by British tunnelling units beneath the forward position of the German 4th Army (General Friedrich Bertram Sixt von Armin), killed approximately 10,000 German soldiers and created 19 large craters. The Mines in the Battle of Messines comprised a series of underground explosive charges which were fired during the First World War at the start of the Battle of Messines (7–14 June 1917) by the British Second Army (General Sir Herbert Plumer) near the village of Mesen ( Messines in French, historically also used in English and German) in Belgian West Flanders.

By realizing an interface, classes are guaranteed to support a required behavior, which allows the system to treat non-related elements in the same way – that is, through the common interface. ![]() In addition the # symbol allows an operation, or attribute, to be defined as protected, while the ~ symbol indicates package visibility.Īn interface is a specification of behavior that implementers agree to meet it is a contract. The notation that precedes the attribute, or operation name, indicates the visibility of the element: if the + symbol is used, the attribute, or operation, has a public level of visibility if a - symbol is used, the attribute, or operation, is private. The final compartment shows the operations setWidth, setLength and setPosition and their parameters. In the diagram below the class contains the class name in the topmost compartment, the next compartment details the attributes, with the "center" attribute showing initial values. Compartments are used to divide the class name, attributes and operations. Classes may also have definitions of constraints, tagged values and stereotypes.Ĭlasses are represented by rectangles which show the name of the class and optionally the name of the operations and attributes. The behavior is described by the possible messages the class is able to understand, along with operations that are appropriate for each message. The strong, composite aggregations by the other connectors indicate ownership or containment of the source classes by the target classes, for example Contact and ContactGroup values will be contained in AddressBook.Ī class is an element that defines the attributes and behaviors that an object is able to generate. Class diagrams are most useful in illustrating relationships between classes and interfaces. Class diagrams depict a static view of the model, or part of the model, describing what attributes and behavior it has rather than detailing the methods for achieving operations. The class diagram shows the building blocks of any object-orientated system. What is a view for?Ī view is created to serve these purposes: And later you can query data from view just like how you treat a normal table of data. To put it in a simple term, a view is a set of results from a query, which you save it under a name (view name) without having to create an actual table. In SQL, a database view, or simply view, is a searchable database object that doesn’t store data, but it aggregate data from one or more tables using a defined query. ![]() ![]() ![]() Whether you prefer wall-mounted or standing clocks, alarm clocks, analog options or digital designs, you’ll find them all at B&M! Unfortunately, my group has been playing these games over Discord, where it’s a lot harder to direct conversations to one other person without disrupting everyone else. It’s a game designed to be chaotic, forcing players to both work together, and undermine each other, which would be exactly the kind of convoluted, messy gameplay that would liven up any party. In this game, players have to coordinate to accomplish tasks in the totally normal home where devils are pretending to be human. Although it seems that, much like a lot of things in 2020, it’s a victim of circumstance. ![]() If there’s one game that did actually bomb (for my groups, anyway), it was The Devil and the Details. Overall it just flows better and feels more like a proper ending to the game. Instead, Quiplash 3 gets rid of this ending and swaps it out for a three-prompt round, where two players are pitted against each other, and can provide three answers to a prompt such as “The three steps to have a perfect little morning.” Each answer is read out one at a time, giving players more of a sense of timing and presentation to their answers. Plus, it’s over pretty quickly in something of an anti-climax. It’s fine! But having so many answers to one prompt can drive home how difficult it is for your group to be funny. In previous Quiplashes, players would compete to fill in prompts against each other, only for everyone to get the same prompt in the final round. However, this version does something crucial: it fixes the godawful endgame. ![]() Quiplash is one of Jackbox’s classic games, so putting in a third version feels like a cheat to raise the pack’s average quality. See also: Evolution of fish Fossil record Fossil shark tooth (size over 9 cm or 3.5 inches) with crown, shoulder, root and root lobe A collection of Cretaceous shark teeth However, the Middle English Dictionary records an isolated occurrence of the word shark (referring to a sea fish) in a letter written by Thomas Beckington in 1442, which rules out a New World etymology. Įvidence for this etymology came from the Oxford English Dictionary, which notes shark first came into use after Sir John Hawkins' sailors exhibited one in London in 1569 and posted " sharke" to refer to the large sharks of the Caribbean Sea. Ī now disproven theory is that it derives from the Yucatec Maya word xook ( pronounced ), meaning 'shark'. card shark, loan shark, etc.), which was later applied to the fish due to its predatory behaviour. The etymology of the word shark is uncertain, the most likely etymology states that the original sense of the word was that of "predator, one who preys on others" from the Dutch schurk, meaning 'villain, scoundrel' ( cf. This is still evidential in several species termed " dogfish," or the porbeagle. Until the 16th century, sharks were known to mariners as "sea dogs". Since 1970, shark populations have been reduced by 71%, mostly from overfishing. Many shark populations are threatened by human activities. Sharks are caught by humans for shark meat or shark fin soup. Select examples include the tiger shark, blue shark, great white shark, mako shark, thresher shark, and hammerhead shark. Several species are apex predators, which are organisms that are at the top of their food chain. They have numerous sets of replaceable teeth. Sharks have a covering of dermal denticles that protects their skin from damage and parasites in addition to improving their fluid dynamics. They generally do not live in freshwater, although there are a few known exceptions, such as the bull shark and the river shark, which can be found in both seawater and freshwater. ![]() ![]() They are found in all seas and are common to depths up to 2,000 metres (6,600 ft). ![]() Sharks range in size from the small dwarf lanternshark ( Etmopterus perryi), a deep sea species that is only 17 centimetres (6.7 in) in length, to the whale shark ( Rhincodon typus), the largest fish in the world, which reaches approximately 12 metres (40 ft) in length. ![]() The oldest modern sharks (selachimorphs) are known from the Early Jurassic, about 200 million years ago. Shark-like chondrichthyans such as Cladoselache and Doliodus first appeared in the Devonian Period (419–359 million years), though some fossilized chondrichthyan-like scales are as old as the Late Ordovician (458–444 million years ago). Some sources extend the term "shark" as an informal category including extinct members of Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fish) with a shark-like morphology, such as hybodonts. Modern sharks are classified within the clade Selachimorpha (or Selachii) and are the sister group to the Batoidea ( rays and kin). Sharks are a group of elasmobranch fish characterized by a cartilaginous skeleton, five to seven gill slits on the sides of the head, and pectoral fins that are not fused to the head.
